#0118 Along the Gowanus Canal

I found these factory buildings along the Gowanus Canal and thought they would make good subject matter for a cloudy day painting. I liked the idea of coordinating the four major elements of the scene: sky, man-made structures, water, and vegetation. I way it as a disparate puzzle and my job was to make sense out of it. The challenging part of cloudy day painting is that there are no definitive lights or darks, so objects tend to flatten out which makes it more difficult to show depth. The grittiness of the situation also lends itself to an overcast day painting.
