#0127 Island Birch

This is a late afternoon, early evening painting done from Chebeague Island in Casco Bay off the southern coast of Maine. Being in this situation I wanted to do a view of the ocean but I didn't want it to be just that. The gnarly birch tree I found gave me a foreground subject, and the water behind it the ocean view I was looking for. I feel this is an essay on the fundamental relationships between sky, water, and vegetation: the sky's deep profound space, the ocean's strong rhythmic horizontal motion and the plant's and tree's wild yet vertical movement. This particular cove is also an area of working lobstermen. At the end of the day they would return from a day on the ocean, tie their boats up at moorings and head home.
